Why your hard drive shows less space than advertised. Drive manufacturers use decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Operating systems use binary (1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). A '1 TB' drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows or macOS. Neither is wrong — they're using different definitions.

GB (gigabyte) = 1,000,000,000 bytes in SI. GiB (gibibyte) = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰). Hard drive specs use GB. Operating systems historically used GiB but called it GB, which caused the confusion.
